Nuclear power is of great importance to the global energy mix. Its production from nuclear power plants guarantees reliable and low-carbon electricity, important for achieving climate goals and ensuring energy security. With advances in technology and the growing demand for sustainable solutions, nuclear power companies play a vital role in shaping the future of clean energy. Current trends suggest that in the future, large nuclear power plants will be joined by plants based on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). According to the IAEA PRIS platform, as of March 2025, there were 416 nuclear reactors operating in the world and 62 under construction. The companies that are leading global leaders in the construction of nuclear power plants can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

The leaders:

1. Electricité de France (EDF)

Electricité de France (EDF) is a global leader in nuclear power, operating 56 reactors in France and working on many projects internationally. EDF accounts for nearly 70% of France’s electricity generated through nuclear power plants. This makes it one of the world’s most significant players in the field of low-carbon energy. In recent years, the company has invested heavily in next-generation reactors, such as the European Pressurized Reactor (EPR), which offers improved safety and efficiency. EDF is also collaborating on international projects, including Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C in the UK. EDF is expected to make a final investment decision by mid-2026 to build six more EPR2 nuclear power units. The preliminary estimate is that this will require around €100 billion.

 2. Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom

Russia’s Rosatom controls the entire nuclear energy cycle, from uranium extraction to reactor decommissioning. Rosatom is among the companies that dominate the world’s nuclear power projects, with a share of over 35%. Its flagship projects include the development of VVER reactors and floating nuclear power plants such as the Ac. Lomonosov. The company also prioritizes international partnerships and is currently working on various projects with countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

3. Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO)

The Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) plays a significant role in South Korea’s nuclear energy sector, operating 24 reactors in the country. KEPCO has made a name for itself internationally with the successful deployment of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE. It is also the first nuclear project in the Arab world. As a pioneer in advanced reactor technology, KEPCO focuses on developing sustainable nuclear solutions and strengthening global partnerships

4. China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC)

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) is at the forefront of nuclear power development in China. It operates 57 reactors and has plans to significantly expand its nuclear capacity. CNNC is a state-owned enterprise that plays a strategic role in achieving China’s energy goals, including the Belt and Road Initiative. The corporation has also been at the forefront of developing cutting-edge technologies such as the Hualong One reactors, which feature improved safety and efficiency. In terms of nuclear power management, CNNC is already catching up with France’s EDF and some even say it has overtaken France’s EDF.

5. Duke Energy (USA)

Focused on clean energy production, the US-based Duke Energy operates 7 nuclear power plants in the southeastern United States. This ensures the region’s energy stability. Duke Energy continues to modernize its nuclear facilities by integrating advanced monitoring systems to improve operational efficiency and safety.

6. NextEra Energy (USA)

NextEra Energy, one of the largest producers of renewable energy. The company also operates nuclear facilities, reinforcing its commitment to a balanced energy portfolio. The company’s nuclear plants play a key role in reducing carbon emissions and complement its solar and wind assets. NextEra’s investments in sustainability and innovation place it among the leaders in clean energy.

7. Entergy Corporation (USA)

Entergy Corporation operates several nuclear power plants, including the Waterford and Arkansas Nuclear One facilities. As a major player in the US energy sector, Entergy emphasizes safe, reliable, and environmentally friendly nuclear energy. The company is also actively involved in community initiatives and environmental protection programs.

8. Dominion Energy (USA)

Dominion Energy operates nuclear facilities such as the North Anna and Surry power plants, which provide clean electricity to millions of customers. Dominion is committed to developing small modular reactor (SMR) technology and improving the sustainability of its energy mix. These initiatives are consistent with its broader goals of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

9. NuScale Power (USA)

NuScale Power is a pioneer in the development of small modular reactors (SMRs), which promise scalable and efficient nuclear power solutions. The company's technology offers increased flexibility to meet diverse energy needs while reducing upfront costs. NuScale's partnerships with government organizations and energy providers make it a key innovator in the future of nuclear power.
