Sofia Airport is now named after the Apostle of Freedom – Vasil Levski. This is an appreciation for the past, but also a look to the future. I believe that in the coming years we will continue to develop Vasil Levski Airport – Sofia so that it meets high modern standards. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadzhov during the naming ceremony of Sofia Airport with the name Vasil Levski Airport – Sofia.

The Deputy Prime Minister recalled the words of Vasil Levski, with which the Apostle points out the path to integration of Bulgarians in Europe: “It is up to us to be equal with other European nations. Our precious homeland will need worthy people to lead it on the path of prosperity, so that we will be equal to other European nations.”

Regarding the procedures for naming the capital’s airport, Grozdan Karadzhov explained that immediately after the issuance of the Presidential Decree, actions were taken by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation, the State Aviation Administration and the airport operator “Sof Connect” AD to notify the international aviation organizations IATA and ICAO, which must publish the new name in the registers.

“Usually, such update procedures take between 3 and 6 months, but we expect this to happen in about 3 months. The State Aviation Administration must also update its registers, and I am assured that this will be done within a month. These deadlines will in no way hinder the normal functioning of the airport, as the change does not concern the operational indicators – IATA and ICAO codes”, said Grozdan Karadzhov. The Deputy Prime Minister added that the previous identification codes – SOF of IATA and LBSF of ICAO – will be retained.
