Minister Malinov: We will ensure a smooth transition in coal regions
“The two draft laws – for a green transition of coal regions and for the so-called early retirement of those employed in the sector – reflect our vision for the support that coal energy should receive in the country. They will provide an opportunity for social peace for those employed in the sector and at the same time - good employment and a smooth transition for the affected regions." This was said by the Minister of Energy Vladimir Malinov during a joint meeting of the Branch Council for Trilateral Cooperation on Coal Mining, Energy Resources and Mining Construction and the Branch Council for Trilateral Cooperation "Energy", held at the Ministry of Energy on Monday, January 6, 2025.
According to Minister Malinov, in the current regulatory period, the country's electricity mix cannot be achieved without the participation of thermal power plants. Therefore, the Ministry of Energy is considering options for supporting these capacities, which should comply with the rules on state aid.
The Ministry of Energy proposes to create a sole state company for the restoration and strengthening of terrains disturbed by mining activities in coal mining regions with a special bill. The company will be financed under the "Green Transition of Coal Regions" investment from the National Recovery and Sustainability Plan, programs and funds of the EU and international organizations, the state budget, and others.
