A memorandum of understanding for the construction of the North-South transport corridor, which connects the Greek Eastern Mediterranean through Bulgaria and Romania to Northern Europe, was discussed at a tripartite working meeting in Sofia today. The Minister of Finance Asen Vassilev, the Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Gvozdeikov, the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Andrey Tsekov and the Minister of Environment and Water Julian Popov took part in the discussion. The Greek side was represented by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, and the Romanian side by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Constantin Gabriel Bunduk, and the director of the Romanian Railway Company, Radu Urzicianu. This was announced today by the Ministry of Finance.

The purpose of the Memorandum is to develop and strengthen cooperation between Bulgaria, Greece and Romania and to outline the necessary legal and financial framework for the preparation and construction of the infrastructure project. The document will identify the main principles of tripartite cooperation.

The memorandum is being prepared in implementation of the joint declaration signed between the heads of government of the three countries in October 2023 in Evksinograd. It has a key role in building a sustainable trans-European infrastructure and in strengthening regional connectivity in South-Eastern Europe. The document addresses the need to connect the Baltic, Black and Mediterranean Seas, which aims to increase European competitiveness and economic growth. After its signing, a contract will be drawn up, which will formulate the specific commitments of the parties regarding the implementation of regional connectivity projects.
