The Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) has started a review of the documents for licensing a new type of nuclear fuel to be used at the Kozloduy NPP. This is clear from a message on the NRA page. The regulator will announce in a special section of its website the progress of the request made by Kozloduy NPP. It is clear from the information that on July 20, 2023, the Nuclear Regulatory Agency received an application requesting the issuance of a permit for the use of a new type of nuclear fuel RWFA produced by Westinghouse in unit 5 of the Kozloduy NPP.

The application submitted by the NPP is for making changes under Art. 15, paragraph 4, item 5 of the Law on the Safe Use of Nuclear Energy (LSUNE) and more than 80 documents totaling more than 8,400 pages, mostly technical documentation and safety analyses, are attached to it. With the submission of the application, the process of licensing the new type of nuclear fuel has started, commented the NRA.

The first step of this process is the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, based on Art. 6 of the Ordinance on the Procedure for Issuing Licenses and Permits for the Safe Use of Nuclear Energy, to check whether all necessary documents have been submitted in accordance with the requirements of Art. 4, Art. 5 and Art. 57 of the Ordinance or the so-called check for formal regularity.

Guided by its policy of openness and transparency and in fulfillment of the duties of the chairman of the NRA under Art. 5, item 9 of the LSUNE, the Agency will publish up-to-date information on the development of the process of issuing a permit for the use of a new type of RWFA nuclear fuel.
