ConturGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP produced almost 10% of the country's electricity in the first three months of 2023
After serious investments in the last 20 years, the plant has an important role for energy security in our country and meets European environmental standards
"ConturGlobal Maritsa East 3" TPP provided nearly 10% of the electricity produced in the country in the first three months of 2023. This amount is enough to cover the average consumption for the period of almost 1,200,000 Bulgarian households or about 40% of their total number.
In addition to having an important role in ensuring energy supplies, the "ConturGlobal Maritsa East 3" TPP is also one of the modernized facilities in our country that meet European environmental standards to the highest degree.
Over the past 20 years, nearly BGN 1.5 billion have been invested in the plant to extend the life of the units, greening and ensuring reliable operation. During the period, a number of projects were implemented to ensure the fulfillment of increasingly strict European requirements for environmental protection. As a result, 97% effective purification of flue gases from sulfur dioxide was achieved and 99.96% of dust emissions were captured. The use of fresh water is cut in half, and 100% of the waste water generated is treated. A buffer lake of 30,000 cubic meters was also built for water reuse.
"We understand the important role of the ConturGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP for the country's energy security and independence, and we are constantly working to modernize and maintain high operational standards. As a result, the plant works reliably and meets European requirements for environmental protection and safety. This allows us to provide safe, affordable and sustainable energy for businesses and households, while at the same time supporting the economic development of the country," said Alexander Zhelev, chief engineer of “ConturGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP”.
TPP "ConturGlobal Maritsa East 3" has been certified for years according to two international standards - ISO 14001:2015, related to environmental protection, and ISO 45001:2018 (OHSAS), which concerns health and safe working conditions. In September 2022, it successfully passed an external audit by the international certification organization SGS, which proved once again that the plant meets the strict requirements of both standards.
“ConturGlobal Maritsa East 3” owns and operates the second largest thermal power plant in Bulgaria with an installed capacity of 908 MW. It is of key importance for the energy sector as it contributes to the country's energy security and independence and ensures the regulation of the electricity system. Nearly BGN 1.5 billion has been invested to ensure the plant's reliable operation and measures to protect the environment and work safety. The shareholders are the international energy company ContourGlobal (73%) and the National Electric Company (27%).
