Because of a breach in security: the Minister of Transport talked about canceling the concession of Sofia Airport
The state will take the strictest sanctions against the concessionaire of "Sofia Airport" if security is not improved. This includes staff training and improvement of equipment, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Hristo Alexiev. His words are on the occasion of the European Commission's inspection, which found a breach in the security of the airport, endangering the lives of passengers. "Two weeks ago, I had a meeting with the representatives of the concessionaire of Sofia Airport and the president of Munich Airport, who are in the consortium on this matter. They committed themselves very seriously to solving security issues and the quality of service," said Deputy Prime Minister Alexiev.
We got to the point where the concessionaire, who was supposed to manage the airport better, clearly underestimated the security there," commented Hristo Alexiev. He clarified that the contract foresees sanctions that are quite serious and if the non-fulfillment continues, termination of the concession can be taken... Let's see the next inspection of the EC, but this has been stated to them as well. To fulfill their obligations as they have undertaken them," Alexiev was categorical, quoted by BNR.
Irregularities must be rectified, as a new inspection by the European Commission is expected, the minister warned.
We remind you that a secret inspection by inspectors of the European Commission at Sofia Airport has found security gaps. Security officers have allowed prohibited items to pass through X-ray hand baggage checks. The inspectors were in Bulgaria between October 10 and 14 and it was a routine inspection.
