Bulgaria plans to implement electricity storage projects in order to ensure balance and flexibility of the system, strengthen its position as an exporter and ensure cross-border flexibility of the system. The total value of the investments amounts to over 620 million euros. This is written in the Plan for implementation of the principles of the new electricity market, presented by our country in the EC, and before that in the National Strategy for Sustainable Energy Development until 2030 with a horizon until 2050.

The energy ministry plans to invest 220m euros to complete the Chaira SHPP project - building the Yadenitsa Dam, which will increase the facility's potential. Another 200m euros will go to frequency-regulating batteries with a total capacity of 180 megawatts. The remaining funds will be invested in combining new renewable sources with local electricity storage facilities.

In the period 2020-2030, Bulgaria will build 2.6 gigawatts of new RES capacity, mainly photovoltaic installations - 2.1 gigawatts. New wind capacities of 0.25 gigawatts are also envisaged, as well as biomass - 0.22 gigawatts. Green energy from power plants will be used mainly for heating and cooling. The new capacities from renewable energy sources will be built on a market principle, and the development of the sector will be consistent with the possibility of maximum integration of the produced green energy on the electricity market and providing this energy at an affordable and lowest possible price for consumers.
