Emil Dimitrov: We will oblige the TPPs to put infrared cameras on the chimneys because of the dirty air
An innovative center will be opened next week at the Ministry of Environment and Water
All TPPs must install infrared cameras on the chimneys to monitor when they pollute the air, announced today on BNT the Minister of Environment and Water Emil Dimitrov. This will happen with the opening next week of the new center in the Ministry of Environment and Water, which will monitor all dangerous and risky chimneys around the clock. Thus, those TPPs that exceed the permitted emission levels of carbon dioxide will pay high fines.
The topic of dirty air is always relevant because we breathe it every day, and for years there has been no solution to the issue. The burning of RDF is more environmentally friendly, but it has been decided to burn coal at the TPP, the minister said.
There are power plants whose desulfurization plants stop working when a certain capacity is exceeded, he added. Therefore, together with the energy regulator, it will be specified what their permitted capacities are and not to allow them to be exceeded. In Maritza Iztok 2 they want to use more water from the Rozov Kladenets dam, to have water to work more, then they dump more emissions, but that is our policy, said Emil Dimitrov.
In Pernik, when the TPP stops, it will be seen that stoves are also a big problem in the region. The topic of fine dust particles and decisions to deal with air pollution in connection with the lawsuit filed by the EC against Bulgaria is in the hands of municipalities. Unfortunately, the fines are paid not by the municipalities, but by the state, all citizens. According to the Minister of Ecology, no one will do anything in the run-up to the elections.
The case with the regional landfills is also a serious problem, which is also the responsibility of the municipalities. Last year we exported 1,000 tons of hazardous waste from Bulgaria, and it turns out that there are another 7,000 tons of accumulative waste that no one wants and this case is still open, it became clear from the comment of the Minister of Ecology on BNT.
