Meeting with Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said, as quoted by the Government Information Service: "The real breakthrough achieved in the political contacts between Bulgaria and Egypt in the last two years can bring about new practical manifestations of cooperation in all areas."

The two officials talked at Wednesday's formal opening of the Berenice Naval Base on the Red Sea coast. Borissov noted that constructive political dialogue since 2018 has opened a new page in stepping up bilateral cooperation in all areas - politics, the economy, energy, culture, education and tourism.

The Prime Minister was adamant that Bulgaria will continue supporting Egypt's efforts in the fight against terrorism and religious extremism. "We appreciate as very positive Egypt's
Presidency of the African Union and the country's leadership role in the Arab League," said Borissov.

He stressed Bulgaria's particular interest in bilateral energy cooperation in view of Egypt's natural gas resources and the implementation of a number of energy projects in Bulgaria. "This will help us be both a consumer and a transit hub for considerable amounts of natural gas from Asia and the Middle East to Europe," the Prime Minister said.

At the opening ceremony, Borissov also met with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces.

The two concurred that the dynamics of bilateral relations should be maintained while creating prerequisites for an even more active partnership. They discussed ways to build upon
contacts in energy, agriculture, tourism, innovation and high technology. Borissov stressed that Bulgaria's participation in Expo 2020 Dubai will help to upgrade bilateral economic relations.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister and Abu DhabiТs Crown Prince noted the good cooperation in home affairs and the fight against organized crime, terrorism, drug trafficking and cybercrime.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Krassimir Karakachanov is on the Bulgarian delegation.
