Large-scale modernization of the railway section from Sofia to Voluyak starts today. It covers the entire infrastructure between them, which is approximately 10 km long. In addition to replacing the existing lines, the project provides for the construction of new stations, repair of existing ones, construction of sound insulation and more. The official start of the construction activities was given by Nelly Andreeva, Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications and Krassimir Papukchiiski, Director General of NRIC.

The contract for modernization of the Sofia railway junction includes design and construction. The project activities include technical and detailed design of the track development of Sofia Central Station and the Sofia-Voluyak interstation for the modernization of a double-track railway, the catenary and construction of a new third electrified track from the Central Railway Station in the capital to Voluyak Station.

New reception buildings will be built in the section at Voluyak station and Obelya station, and Nadezhda and Vrabnitsa stations will be renovated. The construction of a completely new Obelya station is forthcoming, which will include 6 electrified tracks, parking lots and facilities for public transport connections, including the metro. New platforms, pedestrian underpasses and overpasses with accessible accessibility for people with disabilities and people with reduced mobility will be built in the entire section. The traffic in Sofia is expected to be reduced, as well as the travel time for freight and passenger trains in the direction from the Turkish border towards the border with Serbia.

The planned noise protection facilities in the area of ​​the stations will minimize noise for the residents of the area from passing trains, and the safety fences will limit the unregulated crossing of railway tracks by the citizens.

Project "Design and construction for modernization of track development of Sofia Central Station and railway section Central Station Sofia-Voluyak" is part of the project "Development of railway junction Sofia: railway section Sofia-Voluyak" and is co-financed by the Connecting Mechanism. Europe (CEF). The value of the construction contract is BGN 199,850,060.56 without VAT, and its contractor is ZGOP BULGARIA DZZD, including the companies: Todini Bulgaria OOD and ZGOP AD
