Bulgaria and Canada to exchange experience and expertise in the field of nuclear energy. This was agreed upon by the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Bulgaria, Vladimir Malinov, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada, based in Bucharest, H.E. Gavin Bakken.

"The development of nuclear energy in Bulgaria through the construction of the 7th and 8th units at the Kozloduy NPP is an irreversible process that enjoys political support in our country. The project is of primary importance for guaranteeing energy security and the production of clean electricity at affordable prices for the region," noted Minister Malinov.

Representatives of the state-owned Canadian Trade Agency, the leading Canadian energy production company in Ontario - Ontario Power Generation, and their subsidiary engineering company Laurentis also took part in the meeting. In front of them, the Minister of Energy presented the schedule for the implementation of the activities for the implementation of the project for new nuclear capacities, recalling that the final investment decision will be made in the last quarter of next year.

On behalf of His Excellency Gavin Bakon expressed interest in deepening the Bulgarian-Canadian cooperation in the field of energy and in particular in relation to the nuclear sector. More than two hundred companies work in this field in Canada, developing their activities in European countries as well. Minister Malinov expressed confidence that the exchange of experience between experts from both countries will be of mutual interest.

The future role of small modular reactors as complementary energy capacities was also discussed during the conversation. "Bulgaria shows significant interest in the experience of the Canadian country in the construction of small modular reactors. The application of the technology in our country would contribute to achieving the goals for decarbonization," said Minister Malinov. He recalled that a joint study with the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) on the various technologies for building small modular reactors is about to be conducted.
