President Rumen Radev handed an exploratory mandate to form a government to the candidate for prime minister of the first political force "We continue the change". A little earlier, in a video address, the current Prime Minister in resignation Kiril Petkov announced that he is giving up his position to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Asen Vasilev.

"You remember that I warned that if decisive reforms are not undertaken in the judicial system already in the first 100 days of the government, the status quo will seek its revenge," Rumen Radev addressed Asen Vasilev, handing him the mandate folder, and continued: "It is extremely important to form a stable government that will meet the interests of the Bulgarian citizens. I expect adequate decisions to defend the national interest".

For his part, Asen Vasilev, nominated for prime minister, noted that he accepts this as a huge responsibility, because it is important to have a cabinet.

"For me, this is a huge responsibility. It is extremely important that we have a cabinet and that this cabinet works in the interest of the citizens, not in the interest of the status quo, and that it really defends the Bulgarian interest and the independence of Bulgaria as it did in the first mandate of "We are continuing the change," Vasilev pointed out.

"We continue the change" refused to appear at the consultations with the head of state, which took place a few days earlier, citing the then meeting of the budget commission as the reason. It was expected that a new meeting date would be scheduled, but Rumen Radev declared the consultations closed after the talks with the representatives of "Vazrazhdane".

After receiving the mandate from "Continuing the Change", they have a seven-day deadline to issue a draft cabinet. In the event that they fail, the Constitution provides that the next mandate will go to GERB-SDS, as they are the second largest party in the Parliament. However, they have already announced their intention to immediately return the mandate as soon as they receive it, without making any attempt to form a government. This means that the president will have to hand the third term to a party at his discretion.
