GERB started consultations on convening Grand National Assembly and adoption of new Constitution

On August 25, the GERB Parliamentary Group held consultations with its coalition partners from the United Patriots (IMRO) and the National Front for Salvation of Bulgaria (NFSB)), on convening a Grand National Assembly to adopt a new Constitution of Bulgaria.

We have the support in principle from IMRO (a constituent party of United Patriots alliance) to go ahead with the procedure for convening a Grand National Assembly and from there to the procedure for drafting a new Constitution, the chair of GERB Daniela Daritkova said on August 25 in a statement after the end of the consultations in the Parliament.

GERB said that the draft Constitution submitted by them is not final and is currently being amended, both in terms of its legal side and in terms of its technical side.

It is most likely that an agreement will be reached between IMRO and GERB to submit a draft of a new Constitution and a decision to convene the Grand National Assembly, it became clear from the statements of IMRO chair Iskren Veselinov and GERB chair Daniela Daritkova.

"We have the support of the NFSB for convening a Grand National Assembly," said Parliament Speaker and GERB MP Tsveta Karayancheva on August 25.

"Colleagues said they were willing to accept our proposal to collect 120 signatures to launch a procedure for the Grand National Assembly and a new Constitution. Of course, this is only the first step, expressed political will," she continued.

Karayancheva said that after September 2, when the procedure for collecting signatures will take place, a period will start in which all proposals will be considered, because each parliamentary group will have a proposal, and colleagues said what their proposals are.

"We have clarified again that there will be appropriate technical corrections in our draft," Karayancheva continued.

She stressed that colleagues from the NFSB had some suggestions for technical corrections and assured that they would be reflected in the draft, which will be proposed for signatures early next month.

"This draft is not GERB's, this draft is a political will, an invitation to talk," Karayancheva added.

NFSB, which a constituent party of the United Patriots alliance (minority partner in the coalition government) clarified that they have received the assurances of the larger coalition partner GERB to preserve the three, according to them, important foundations in the new version - the nation state, Bulgarian as national language and Orthodoxy as a traditional religion.

"These are things that should not be retreated," said Boris Yachev. NFSB also expressed satisfaction with the fact that some of GERB's proposals overlap with their old ideas - reducing the number of MPs and introducing an individual constitutional complaint.

The ruling party also announced that the talks with independent MPs scheduled for today have been postponed, as these MPs have asked for more time to get acquainted with the proposals in the draft for new Constitution.
