The third line of the underground in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia will open on Wednesday, August 26.
The construction of the 8 km long section started in 2016.
It will connect the suburbs “Krasno Selo” and “Hadzhi Dimitar”.
It is anticipated that about 60,000 people will make use of the service.
The latest generation of trains will run on the new line. There are possibilities for automated operation.
The investment in the first section of line 3 is 398 million euro, including the metro rail network, 20 new trains and the depot.
The launch of service on Sofia metro line 3, initially planned for October 2019, has been delayed due to complications with the tunnelling machine. The deadline was then extended for two months and the tests of the tunnelling machine began in December. The opening of the first section of the line was envisioned for May this year, but it was again delayed because of the coronavirus situation.
The launch of the new line will take place on August 26 at “University of Medicine” station. It will become open to the public at 14:00. As part of the tradition, travel on the first day will be free of charge.
