Electronics and electrical engineering take the first place in Bulgarian exports, as the sector totals nearly 7 billion leva or a little over 12 per cent of the total export for 2018, according to data from the National Statistical Institute and the Bulgarian Association of Electrical Engineering and Electronics.

From 2007 until the end of 2018, this was the sector with the most significant progress in export, as it increased four-fold for that period. At first, the total worth of electronics and electrical engineering export totalled over 1.5 billion leva, and it reached 6.963 billion leva at the end of 2018, thus climbing from fifth to first place and taking the place of mineral fuels, copper and copper products, and clothing.

The biggest market for the electronics and electrical engineering sector is Germany, which receives 20 per cent of the total export. As of 2016, Bulgaria has been exporting to Germany more products from the sector than it has been importing. In 2018, this country exported to Germany products from the sector worth over 1.1 billion leva, among which refrigerators, electric devices, cable molds for cars, switchboards, panels, consoles and others.

According to experts, the sector has the potential for an even bigger progress in the export of electronics and electrical engineering, but it is faced with the problem of finding skilled labour.
