The Bulgarian Prime Minister participated in a high-level nuclear forum in Brussels
Nuclear energy has an important role to play in ensuring national, regional and global energy security. It is a key element for achieving the goals of the European Union (EU) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and progress towards a climate-neutral economy - priorities that are also leading in energy policy for Bulgaria. This was stated by the resigned Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov during his participation in the first Nuclear Energy Summit. The forum is being held in Brussels under the joint hosting of the Belgian government and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It aims to send a strong message to the international community about the importance of nuclear energy and nuclear technology as a means of combating climate change and achieving climate neutrality goals.
In his speech, Academician Denkov recalled that Bulgaria has a proven 50-year experience in the safe and secure operation of nuclear power plants, as well as unique experience in the decommissioning of nuclear units. "We will continue to rely on nuclear energy as a major factor in our country's energy balance under conditions of high technology, production efficiency, absence of greenhouse gas emissions, competitive prices and a high level of nuclear safety, security and radiation protection," he said. the Prime Minister. Denkov emphasizes investing in new generation technologies and diversification as a cornerstone of our national strategy. The Bulgarian Prime Minister also pointed out the essential importance of international cooperation, of which today's summit is a part, and the leading role of the IAEA.
Prime Minister Academician Nikolay Denkov specifically focused on the topic of safety and security of nuclear facilities - a major factor in the development of nuclear energy. Denkov described Russia's war against Ukraine as the most serious threat to safety and security. The Prime Minister pointed out that Russia's illegal occupation of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant has led to unprecedented breaches of nuclear safety and security that threaten Ukraine and the wider European region. "We commend the professional and indispensable work of the IAEA experts to prevent a nuclear accident in Ukraine. We call on Russia to return full control to the Ukrainian authorities and immediately withdraw its troops from the territory of Ukraine to its internationally recognized borders," Prime Minister Academician Denkov also stated in his speech.
