The government is ending the search for an investor for the Belene NPP and the site will no longer be of national importance. This became clear after the meeting of the Council of Ministers today. BEH and the Ministry of Energy are now in progress, which must notify the participants, candidate investors, that the procedure for the Belene NPP is being cancelled. At its meeting today, the Council of Ministers adopted a decision revoking a government decision from 2018 related to the future Belene nuclear power plant. On June 29, 2018, the Council of Ministers adopted the decision No. 447 in question, which in turn repealed the previous government decision - No. 250 of 2012, which in turn repealed Decision No. 259 of 2005, on the designation of an energy site "Nuclear plant at the Belene site as an object of national importance and for the construction of a nuclear plant at the Belene site, to conduct negotiations with potential investors and equipment manufacturers.
With today's government decision, the Minister of Energy is tasked with taking actions to terminate the procedure announced by NEC EAD for the selection of strategic investor(s) for the construction of the Belene NPP and to notify the preferred candidates for submitting binding offers, with a confidentiality agreement has been signed.
At the moment, it is not clear what will happen to the equipment for the "Belene" NPP, which is preserved and owned by the Bulgarian state.
