The Sofia City Court said on Tuesday it has returned to the prosecuting authority a case against Vesselin Georgiev, former chief of the National Road Infrastructure Fund, known as "Batko" (Older Brother). Georgiev is charged with unlawfully awarding public procurement contracts to companies in which his brother was an office holder. The case was returned due to irregularities concerning the indictment.

During the pretrial proceedings Georgiev was charged with eight counts, but then another three were added. These other counts were not included in the indictment when the case was referred to the court, and the prosecutors did not state whether the investigation on them should be stopped or not.

The Sofia City Prosecution Office is now expected either to include the three counts in the final indictment, or to drop the criminal proceedings on them, or to consider a separate investigation. The Georgiev case is being watched by Brussels.

It was originally tried by Georgi Kolev while he headed the Sofia City Court, but when Kolev became Chairman of the Supreme Administrative Court, the trial had to start over according to the law.
