The endless pursuit of economic growth and its impact on our environment will be the subject of a series of events entitled "Barcelona Meeting Sofia. The revolution in Spain and the green economy, said the environmental group For Earth.

Renowned scientists from Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona will give their personal views on social and environmental consequences from the indiscriminate economic growth in Spain. A review will be made of the devastating conflicts in tourism, uranium and ore mining in India, Namibia, Ecuador, Bulgaria and other countries. The events start on June 9 in Chervenata kashta (Red House) in Sofia at 9 h local time.

The specialists think that the growing environmental and social disasters, natural resources depletion and the need for direct democracy are only few of the main reasons for the revolution in Spain. They will present the idea of "degrowth" in Western Europe - building an economy that is socially and environmentally sustainable where growth is not seen as the ultimate goal.

The initiatives are organized by For Earth Environmental Association and UNECO. They are part of the project EJOLT - Environmental Justice Organizations, Liabilities and Trade, which is supported by the European Union.
