For the exploration of shale gas in Bulgaria is not required environment assessment according to the Bulgarian and European legislation, because the exploration is not harmful to the environment, the Minister of Environment and Water Nona Karadjova said on Saturday, quoted by Darik Radio.

"If one finds a shale gas and the company is given commercial discovery, and it decides to go to the concession, begins another procedure for environmental impact assessment of the investment project and for evaluating the impact of the project on biodiversity and areas of the European network "Natura", the minister said. She added that these procedures are applied in Bulgaria and the public can get acquainted with them, said BTA.

Two weeks ago, "Coalition for Bulgaria" asked the American company Chevron, which won the tender for the exploration of shale gas near Novi Pazar to stop the operation because of environmental damage that it will cause. "Red" lawmakers believe there is a danger of contamination of groundwater in the region of Dobrich. "It is speculated with populist threats for prospecting and exploration of mineral resources in Bulgaria," said Karadjova.
