The miners' chapter of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria call on the authorities to immediately restart the shut down Unit Two of the Bobov Dol thermo-electric power plant near Pernik in Western Bulgaria, and threaten to start effective strike action unles their demand is met.

The unions set out their demands in a declaration to Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, Economy, Energy and Tourism Minister Traicho Traikov, Environment Minister Nona Karadjova and Labour Minister Totyu Mladenov. Bobov Dol was forced to shut down one generating unit in 2009 and another one late last year, for failing to install flue-gas desulphurization equipment.

Only one generating unit is operating at the moment. They unions say it is inexplicable why the authorities "chose to turn on four generating units of cold-reserve capacities and import expensive coal from Ukraine, Russia and Vietnam, create jobs in other countries and create artificial unemployment in Bulgaria".

The cold-reserve facilities were put to use when a strike of miners in the Maritsa East coal mine disrupted the operation of the Maritsa East 2 power plant, which is the largest coal-fuelled power plant in this country. The unions further argue that over 5,000 miners and energy industry workers lost their job in the aftermath of the shut-down of the second unit at Bobov Dol, with a further. 50,000 to 60,000 jobs being cut in adjacent businesses.

In a separate development, the CEO of the Pernik district heating company, Stoicho Vassilev, presented a statement to the Municipal Council asking a postponement of the shut-down of the Republika thermo-electric power plant. The Environment Ministry has ordered that Republika shut down its only coal-fuelled steam generator as of April 15 - again due to lack of flue-gas desulphurization equipment. The enforcement of the decision wouldm result in 400 job cuts at the power plant, the CEO said.
